Within the therapy and diagnostic sessions, speech-language therapists may need or want to use reinforcement and reinforcers. A reinforcer can be more than an item. It can be a turn on a game, blowing bubbles, learning based tablet app turns, verbal praise, or an earned break. Essentially, reinforcement allows a skill to be learned within the context of fun or enjoyment. Reinforcement is not always positive. It can be negative or eventually a punishment. I prefer positive reinforcement during interactions with clients across all ages and find that clients always respond to positive reinforcement. Even if the client appears to be not attending, specific positive reinforcement gives the client necessary information for learning new skills.
